Is Using An IP Camera With Cloud Capabilities Safe

January 1, 2019 by TJ Leave a Comment

The discussion about how safe IP cameras are as opposed to their analog counterparts often elicits heated debates. These debates chiefly pit experienced engineers against one another, with each one highlighting the pros and cons of IP cameras. Today, we shall discuss the question “Is using an IP camera with cloud capabilities safe?”

The Internet of Things has given birth to some of the amazing tech tools that few people ever thought could be possible. Right now, you can keep tabs on every action that takes place in your home from the convenience of your smartphone. This is probably one of the most outstanding characteristics of a safe home in this age and era.

If you have settled on the IP security cameras for your home surveillance, the choices are abundant. The Oco 1 Cloud Security camera is sure to keep you posted on every suspicious movement, trespass or burglary. The benefit of this is that you could configure it to trigger an alarm and reach out to the police.

To avoid incidents like the Hatton Garden raid of 2015, a great cloud-based IP security camera is essential. In the raid that is considered the biggest burglary in English legal history, some £200 million were stolen. The four thieves who masterminded this heist ended up vandalizing and removing the hard drives containing the footage from the onsite CCTV cameras.

Back to the question: Is Using an IP camera with cloud capabilities safe? Your guesses are as good as mine. With a cloud-based IP security camera, your footage can never be destroyed or carted away. While it took about a week to unravel the whole mystery, a cloud-based IP camera would have relayed the footage in minutes.

With a drastic reduction in the cost of cloud-based storage, most people have opted for this method as opposed to traditional hard drives. This system is, however, revered for its convenience and loathed by some for its vulnerabilities. Here are some of the ways you could ensure you are safe with a cloud-based IP security camera.

  • Passwords: While a good number of people use secure not-easy-to-guess passwords, a sizeable number still use generic passwords. Further, they use one password for all cameras making it easy to spy and manipulate all of the devices at one go! You should use unique and different passwords for each camera.
  • Video encryption: You should encrypt your footages either on a hard disk or on the cloud. This removes chances of tampering and destruction of your surveillance footage by hackers.
  • Network security: Connecting an IP security camera to your local network is fraught with security risks. Hackers could easily access your network and tamper with your footage data as it is transferred to the cloud. Best practice demands that you should protect your cameras with passwords to prevent network and data tampering.
  • Physical stealing of hardware: Sometimes thieves will just intrude to burgle your DVR/NVR/VMS and video storage servers. With the traditional CCTV cameras, your first response is always to ensure these devices are stored safely. For the IP cameras with cloud capabilities, much of the storage is in the cloud and not the on-site recording device.

Conclusion

By using unique passwords both on the camera and network security, you add an extra layer of security that hinders data thieves from accessing your footage data.

To answer the question is using an IP camera with cloud capabilities safe? We would say yes. However, the safety of your cloud-based footage will ultimately depend on how you protect the information and network.
